Why More Nigerians Are Choosing Shortlets Over Hotels When They Travel

The shift away from hotels toward shortlet apartments in Nigeria is not a passing trend. It is a structural change in how Nigerians approach travel and temporary accommodation. The Lagos short-term rental market alone has grown by 263% over the past three years, and the reasons behind that growth are practical, not sentimental.

    1. More space for less money: A shortlet apartment typically offers a living room, kitchen, bedroom, and laundry access for the same or lower cost than a standard hotel room. For groups travelling together, shortlets deliver significantly better value since one apartment replaces multiple hotel rooms, making it the smarter financial choice for families, friends, or work teams travelling together.

    2. Privacy that hotels cannot match: For travellers who prioritise privacy, particularly public figures, corporate executives, and those hosting personal events, shortlets offer complete independence from hotel staff, shared corridors, and public lobbies. You have the entire space to yourself.

    3. The freedom to live normally: Unlike hotels with fixed meal times and strict operational policies, shortlets give guests total control over their stay, from cooking their own meals to inviting guests and setting their own schedule. For longer stays especially, this makes a meaningful difference to daily comfort.

    4. Remote work compatibility: With remote work surging by 200% in Nigeria between 2022 and 2023, digital workers need spaces with a reliable power supply, strong internet, and room to work comfortably. Most quality shortlets are built specifically to meet these needs.

    5. Cost of hotels has risen sharply: Upscale hotel rates in Lagos and Abuja frequently exceed $150 to $200 per night, a figure that has become increasingly difficult to justify when furnished shortlet alternatives offer comparable or superior comfort at a fraction of the cost.

The shortlet market is growing because it genuinely serves travellers better in most situations. Hotels still have their place, but for stays beyond one or two nights, the numbers and the experience increasingly favour shortlets.

The group travel argument is the one that convinces people the fastest. I did the math for a recent trip to Lagos with four colleagues. Three hotel rooms would have cost us almost ₦900,000 for four nights. We found a three-bedroom shortlet in Lekki for ₦420,000 for the same period. Bigger space, better facilities, and we saved nearly half the money.
